As a 16-year-old, IB1 student in Canada, Su Huang hopes to pursue engineering to propel combating social inequalities and injustices through improved access to resources and technology. Her passions extend to international business, global affairs and music.
In February 2022, the Freedom Convoy arrived in Ottawa, Su’s hometown. The group of truckers demonstrated their frustration with the COVID-19-related restrictions, specifically vaccine mandates, as they gridlocked the downtown core for 3 weeks. Witnessing this large-scale, unlawful protest in her hometown led her to realize the growing impact of disinformation in her community and beyond, sparking her interest in combating misinformation.
In response to this, Su launched Veracify. Veracify aims to spread veracity in today’s world of growing disinformation. Within this organization, her team aims to build programs that promote digital literacy to youth, to halt the distribution of misinformation. With global partners such as Systems Change Summit, YOUNGA, and the Learning Planet Alliance, Su is constantly working towards making a greater, global impact.
Su participates in many organizations and activities, including those tackling the aforementioned social issues, while pursuing a wider spectrum of interests individually. She is a part of her local International Certificate Program in which she explores different cultures and learns about international issues. It has provided her with international and local speaking opportunity such as the Jeju International Youth Forum 2022 and the Aga Khan Foundation’s Sexual Reproductive Health Rights 2023 event. Additionally, Su deepened her passions in STEM and business through FIRST Robotics and LaunchX, developing skills in engineering, networking, and marketing. She is currently pursuing research in quantum machine learning. Through these experiences, Su had the opportunity to attend UNGA Action Weekend 2023 at the UN Headquarters in New York, where she heard from inspirational changemakers and met like-minded youth.
In the future, Su intends to pursue post-secondary education in engineering, while making a difference in society. She hopes to continue learning and sharing about her field of choice and real-world issues.
Driven by her passion for game development, Rachel uses STEM as a tool to spread awareness about pressing global issues such as saving the Old Growth Forests. Beyond her commitment to the environment, Rachel is also enthusiastic about engaging in conversations with diverse individuals and contributing to her community.
Rachel has come across numerous articles containing false and biased information, and understands the critical importance of recognizing the spread of misinformation in today’s tumultuous world.
